JOSH BATES has been given the all-clear to begin light training in the gym.

Barnsley-boy Bates suffered a broken bone in his back in a freak accident when out sledging with pals on the eve of the season.

He had an operation swiftly afterwards and has spent the last month resting the injury.

Now he’s been to see a physio at Rotherham hospital who says he’s gaining strength and can start some light work but is still not ready to get on a bike.

“I’m pleased with the way the injury is progressing,” he said. “I’m feeling stronger every day and obviously I can’t wait to get back racing again.

“I’ve got to take it nice and carefully and build up my strength to the point I can get back on a bike and do some laps.

“I must be the only person in the country who has been pleased to see the rain, hopefully meetings will be re-arranged for when I’m back riding!

“I’ll go back again in a week or so for a further update and to establish how long it’s likely to be before I can get back on the bike.”

Bates has once again offered his thanks to everyone who has supported him during his spell on the sidelines.

“Sponsors have stood by me and the fans have been brilliant, I want everyone to know how much I appreciate it,” he said.

“It’s made me even more determined to get back and start scoring points my clubs expect me to get.”
